Kosher Food

This is a challenging part of Jewish life in Tokyo. None of the supermarkets here have a kosher section. Foods you may be accustomed to buying back home with a kosher certification may not be available or the local versions are adjusted to Japanese tastes by including non-kosher ingredients. Major supermarkets such as Nissin, National Azabu, Kimuraya often cary imported snack foods or some prepared foods but please be aware that what was available yesterday may not be available tomorrow and sometimes manufacturers change their products. Some kosher food products are also available from Costco. Be sure too look for the kosher certification mark before you purchase something.

If you are accustomed to living in a city with many kosher or even "kosher style" restaurants you may find yourself improving your cooking skills. Fortunately many delicious fresh vegetables and other basic ingredients are available from your local market and a wide selection of kosher fishes are available as well. This link (http://www.kosherquest.org/bookhtml/FISH.htm) will help you understand which fish are kosher and give you some information on their Japanese names.

We will be featuring various locally available kosher eats and recipes on our blog, we hope you enjoy them!

If you are visiting Tokyo for a short time and need delivery of kosher food, please contact Rabbi Mendi or Chana to make an arrangement.

Jewish learning

Rabbi Medi leads a class on the weekly Torah portion every Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 9:00. Discussions are lively and we bring different sources to help understand how the Torah matters to the lives of Jews today. Learning Torah isn't only  for those with a yeshiva education, we make the experience enjoyable for Jews with any level of learning. Even if you haven't done anything since your bar or bat mitzvah, even if you never learned any Torah at all, you are welcome to join us. Private instruction can also be arranged as required.

Shabbat, holidays, yahrzeit or other minyans

Every shabbat and Jewish holiday is celebrated at Chabad Japan. Candle lighting times are listed on the top page of our site. If you need to arrange a minyan for a yahrtzeit or other occasion, please contact Rabbi Mendi directly.
